David Flitcroft has no doubts over Paddy Kenny hunger

David Flitcroft admits that he questioned whether Paddy Kenny could still do a job for Bury when bringing him in last week, but is now happy with the decision.

Bury manager David Flitcroft has insisted that Paddy Kenny still has plenty to offer the club after handing the goalkeeper a short-term deal.

The 37-year-old was brought in last week to cover for Daniel Bachmann and Jack Ruddy, who are both away on international duty.

Due to his lack of first-team action over the past year, Flitcroft admits that he did have some initial fears regarding the hunger and drive of Kenny to still make an impression at League One level.

However, following his first week back at Gigg Lane, the Bury boss has little doubt over the experienced stopper's prospects.

"It was an SOS call really," he told the club's official website. "Paddy's come out of the game and had not been able to find himself a club and obviously with our situation this week, we have absolutely no options available.

"When he came in, I wanted him to feel the environment and see how he felt about the project so he had five days with us. I needed to see him first hand because as soon as that hunger goes it's hard to rejuvenate that.

"But he came in, he started making saves and throwing himself at things, it was just fantastic watching him putting himself in those positions."

Kenny's last senior league appearance came during his time at Oldham Athletic in December 2014, when he shipped seven goals against MK Dons in a 7-0 drubbing.
