Liverpool are allegedly on the verge of reaching an agreement over a summer deal for Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement over a summer deal for Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong.

The Netherlands international has been in strong form for Leverkusen during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring five goals and registering 12 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions.

There has been a host of speculation surrounding the 24-year-old over the last year or so, with a number of Premier League clubs believed to be keen on a deal for the former Manchester City youngster.

Liverpool have recently moved into pole position for the Dutchman, though, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the reigning Premier League champions are close to securing a deal for him.

Romano claims that the Reds have been in 'direct contact' with Leverkusen since the start of the week over Frimpong's release clause, with Liverpool willing to pay the €35m (£29.5m) required to release him from his contract.

Liverpool 'nearing agreement' over Frimpong deal

Frimpong made the move to Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, and he has represented the Bundesliga side on 190 occasions, scoring 30 goals and registering 44 assists in the process.

The Dutchman has 23 goals and 28 assists in 133 matches in the Bundesliga, while he also has an impressive record in the Champions League, coming up with seven assists in 15 appearances in the competition.

Frimpong has mainly been used as a right-sided wing-back by Leverkusen, but he is also capable of operating further forward, making him an interesting option for Liverpool head coach Arne Slot in certain matches.

Romano claims that Liverpool will pay Frimpong's release clause in instalments, and there is not believed to be any serious competition for the Reds at this stage, with an announcement expected in the near future.

Slot has been questioned on potential Frimpong arrival

Liverpool head coach Slot was asked on Friday during his press conference about Frimpong's potential arrival, but he refused to confirm whether the Dutchman would be making the switch to Anfield.

"It's going to be boring answer," Slot said. "For whole season it was about contract extensions and now we're arriving at a time where everyone wants to know who we're bringing in. We don't talk about the players we want to bring in until the moment they've signed for us, and then you can ask me everything you want to about them.

"What I can tell you is we already have Conor Bradley who can play really good in that position. Joe Gomez has also played in that position multiple times, so it is not like once Trent [Alexander-Arnold] leaves, I have no clue what to do anymore. But as a club we are always looking at interesting players who can strengthen our squad."

Alexander-Arnold's exit will open up a space at right-back, with Bradley potentially given the opportunity to cement a spot in the starting XI during the 2025-26 campaign.
