Chelsea are allegedly among three Premier League clubs who are interested in negotiating a deal for Benfica defender Tomas Araujo.

Chelsea have reportedly identified a Benfica defender as a potential transfer target for 2025.

The Blues can be satisfied with their start to the new Premier League campaign, sitting in third position in the table after 11 matches.

Although Enzo Maresca's side have sometimes come in for criticism regarding their performances at the back, they possess the joint-sixth best defensive record in the division.

Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill are the preferred pair in the centre with Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi all viewed as backup options.

However, with Disasi potentially being considered for an exit if his lack of game time continues, Maresca may be of the opinion that he requires a replacement.

Araujo on Chelsea radar?

According to O Jogo, Chelsea have emerged as admirers of Benfica centre-back Tomas Araujo.

The 22-year-old has come through the academy setup at Estadio da Luz to make 36 appearances for the first team, contributing one goal and one assist.

His progression in the senior ranks has been accelerated this season with 11 starts in the Primeira Liga and the Champions League, starring in emphatic wins over the likes of Atletico Madrid and Porto.

As such, Araujo has allegedly been placed on the shortlists of Chelsea and Crystal Palace, with both clubs said to have already initiated contact regarding his availability.

Araujo, who has represented Portugal at every age level aside from senior, holds a contract with Benfica until the end of 2027-28.

Newcastle to enter the race?

The report adds that Newcastle United are also contemplating whether to enter the race for Araujo, despite the prospect of injured duo Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles returning from injury later in the season.

There is reportedly a release clause of €100m (£82.8m), although that is largely irrelevant given that Benfica would realistically consider lower offers.

That said, Benfica are not short of money in terms of meeting financial regulations through over €140m being generated through player sales in the summer.
