How Real Madrid could line up against Villarreal

Sports Mole looks at how Real Madrid could line up in Thursday's La Liga clash with Villarreal.

Real Madrid will welcome Villarreal on Thursday night knowing that a victory would see them win La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane's side made it nine league wins in a row by beating Granada on Monday night, leaving them within two points of securing just their second league title since 2012.

Los Blancos will fancy their chances of getting the job done against Villarreal, but the Yellow Submarine are currently fifth and have been in good form since the restart.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Madrid could line up on Thursday night.

Madrid will again be without the services of defenders Marcelo and Nacho against Villarreal through injury, while centre-forward Luka Jovic remains a doubt, having been forced to self-isolate after coming into contact with a friend who had recently tested positive for coronavirus.

Zidane otherwise has a full squad to choose from, and it would be fair to say that the Frenchman has plenty of options in the final third of the field.

Madrid played a 4-3-2-1 formation against Granada, but it would not be a surprise to see the leaders switch to a 4-3-3 for this game, allowing Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio to return to the side.

Hazard was an unused substitute on Monday night, suggesting that that he will be involved from the start here, while Asensio replaced Federico Valverde on the hour.

Valverde could drop out of the side to allow Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos to form a midfield three, while Ferland Mendy will continue at left-back due to Marcelo's absence.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes are both expected to start on the bench once again.
